1．2. 2 A Translator Should Be Well Acquainted with the Target Language译者应熟练掌握目的语
Some students usually take no notice of this aspect while rendering something from English into Chinese．They think that Chinese is their mother tongue and they can completely cope with the problems appearing in translating．Actually，we cannot even find a satisfactory or ideal version for a word，a phrase，or a pattern．We all hear of the story about Lu Xun(鲁迅)，who spent days in pondering over one better translation of one word．In translating，we frequently misunderstand some places of the original，which results in inaccuracy of translation; even we don＇t misunderstand，sometimes we cannot hunt for proper Chinese expressions for our understanding of the source language，which more or less influences the quality of our translation．Therefore，it is very indispensable for a translator to possess down-to-earth Chinese level in translating．To achieve this，one translator，for one thing，should master Chinese grammar through textbooks; for another，he should browse a lot of classics and fine literary works so as to acquire standard expressions of Chinese．
Only by acquainting oneself with both the source language and the target language，can one produce a satisfactory translation．An awkward translation is caused either by the poor source language or by the poor target language．In addition，there are still some other causes．The main cause among them is the diversities between the two languages．So far as English-Chinese translation is concerned，there are great diversities between English and Chinese which are classified into two different families，the former，Indo-European Family，the latter，Sino-Tibetan Family．Great diversities lie in history，geography，politics，economy，culture，customs and so on．These diversities cause great difficulties or sometimes even impossibility in translation．
