3.1.2 Partial Negation部分否定
In general, some English indefinite pronouns and ad verbs are partially negative in meaning, including some, somebody, something, somewhere, somewhat, sometim es,etc. Here is one example: Some teachers are not experienced. Its translation“部分教师缺乏经验” shows us tha t the sentence is partially negative because some of the teachers are not experienced, not the whole although there is a negative word not. When we touc h upon these words in translation,we should really know the deep meaning.Besides,we should pay attention to some special constructions.
3.1.2.1 all(every,each,both,many,everything,everybody…)+ not不定代词/形容词+ not结构的翻译

Comments Look more carefully at each pair of sente nces and compare them.We can find that the first s entence is classified to partial negation in meani ng.This is because it contains an indefinite prono un or adverb plus a negative word.On the other han d,the second sentence is completely negative in me aning. So when rendering the negative sentences,we should not merely notice the negative words, but al so pay special attention to those above-mentioned pronouns and adverbs, and their positions in sentences.
However, there are some exceptions in this construction. We should cope with them with great care.
The economic crisis is a mortal wound to the capitalist system, and all the remedies in the world won't heal it.
Version 1:经济危机是资本主义制度的致命伤,世上所有的药方都治不好这种创伤。
Version 2:经济危机是资本主义制度的致命伤,并不是所有的药方都能治好这种创伤。
Comments The original seems to be rendered into two versions according to the construction we have just learned. But when we come across such a sentence,we have to carefully consider it literally—what the writer really means to describe. In this case, what the sentence is meant to say is that none of the remedies in the world will heal it.Therefore, the translation should be version 1.
3.1.2.2 always(much,everywhere,entirely,wholly,altogether,often,enough…)+ not副词+not结构的翻译
In a certain sense,we can find the equivalent for some phrases in this construction. That is,not always equals sometimes; not everywhere is equal to somewhere; not wholly equals in some degree; not altogether is equal to somewhat, and so on.All of them remain partially negative in meaning.

Comments Carefully read these pairs of sentences, and we can say that some adverbs like much, everywhere, entirely, wholly, altogether, often, enough etc.with negative word“not”cause the sentences to be partially negative in meaning.
3.1.2.3 not + adverbial(attributive/predicative)+ and + adverbial(attributive/ predicative)not +状语+and +状语结构的翻译
In this construction, the two adverbials(attributives or predicatives)are connected by the conjunction“and”with negative word“not” .It is partially negative in meaning. In other words,it negates the part behind“and”only.

This book is not instructive or interesting.
此书既无教育意义,又无趣味。

Comments We should really concentrate on the distinction of this construction with different conjunction“and”or“or” .In different use of either of the two conjunctions, the translation is quite different.
3.1.2.4“…not…+…as well as…”structure

3.1.2.5 Some adverbials with partial negation部分否定意义副词的翻译
