5.4 The Procedures of Literary Translation文学翻译的过程
Generally speaking, translating is made up of three steps: understanding, expressing and proofreading, and literary translation still need to follow the procedures. At the same time, the procedure verifying needs to be added in literary translation.
Understanding: Besides what we have mentioned in Chapter 1,analysis is considered while understanding the original. In other words, the translator should analyze the facial, deep and stylistic meanings, and understand content and form of the text, including lexis, syntax and rhetoric, and the author's attitude, views, writing devices, and connotations of some words and phrases.
Verifying: According to Mao Dun (茅盾,1951),“The tra nslator has experienced the author's artistic crea tivity by means of SL itself and verified it in hi s or her own thought, emotion and life experience.T hen he or she uses the literary language of the or iginal to reproduce the content and form of ST cor rectly and completely.Such a translation procedure will put the author in harmony with the translato r so that the translation seems to be written by a nother foreign language.”(译者通过原作的语言外形,深刻地体会了原作者的艺术 创造的过程,把握住原作的精神,在自己的思想、感情、生活体验中找到最适合的印证,然后运用适合于原作风格 的文学语言,把原作的内容与形式正确无遗地再现出来。这样的翻译过程,是译者和原作者合二为一,好像原作者用另外一国文字写自己的作品。)
Expressing: On the basis of understanding and veri fying, the translator should employ literary langua ge and tries his or her best to thoroughly reprodu ce content, form and style of the original so as to make content and form achieve dialectical unity.A s we all know, literary translation lays emphasis o n the reproduction of the original spirit and ling uistic style. It has been acknowledged that literar y translation is referred to as an art and creativ ity. Therefore the translator is required to not on ly comprehend the original and really grasp its gi st,but also have an aesthetic judgment and appreciation to the original.
Proofreading: It is indispensable to proofread the translation version. The procedure of proofreading is to read and correct the translator's proofs,so that the mistakes can be put right before the proper version printing is done.(See Chapter 1)
