8.9. 2 Sound-Rhythm

Sound may remind us of speech,or verbal language. As a matter of fact,in writing, language masters also manage to use such means as stress, weak stress, tone or intonation, long sound or diphthong, etc.so as to make sentences rhythmical.

1)Use of stress and weak sound and its rhythm

img776There's little movement after sunset,in the streets of this quiet village.

img777Huge evergreens towered over us.Gradually the peace and silence of the place began to fill mymind.

Comments Stress and weak sounds are used to form the rhythm in English. We may use Chinese double characters to fit the rhythm.

2)Onomatopoeia and its rhythm

Onomatopoeia is a kind of rhetorical device which can create “sound effects”in a language. Its functions lie in direct hearing, description and vividness. The “sound effect”seems as if we will be personally on the scene.

img778The door banged open.

img779The leaves rustled in the breeze.

img780The small locomotive engine,Number 4,came clanking, stumbling down from Selston with seven full wagons.

Comments In the above-mentioned sentences ,“bang” ,“rustle” ,“clank”and “stumble”are all onomatopoeia words, most of which are single syllables and figuratively depict the sounds that certain objects produce.Correct and corresponding conversion of onomatopoeia words will reflect the features of the original and show the rhythm in the source language.
