img596It was she who had stopped the car where the common rose steeply to the left, and a narrow strip of larch and beech, with here and there a pine, stretched out to the right, towards the valley between the road and the first long high hill of the full moor. She was looking for a place where they might lunch, for Ashurst never looked for anything; and this, between the golden furze and the feathery green larches smelling of lemons in the last sun of April—this, with a view into the deep valley and up to the long moor heights, seems fitting to the decisive nature of one who sketched in water-colors,and loved romantic spots.Grasping her paint box,she got out.(excerpt from The Apple Tree by British writer John Galsworthy)

Comments: Our first impression of this passage is of a meticulously detailed setting of the scene. The description is clearly etched,so that we can reconstruct,in our mind's eyes, the whole topography. But more than this,we have a vivid sense of the loneliness of the human observer, set apart from the surroundings“where the common rose steeply to the left, and a narrow strip of larch and beech, with here and there a pine, stretched out to the right, towards the valley between the road and the first long high hill of the full moor.”Furthermore, the scene is detailedly described that“this, between the golden furze and the feathery green larches smelling of lemons in the last sun of April—this, with a view into the deep valley and up to the long moor heights, seems fitting to the decisive nature of one who sketched in water-colors,and loved romantic spots.”Additionally, quite long sentences are suitably used to describe a scene, and the effect of the placing the shorter sentence at the end is powerful: whereas other sentences relate the setting to the observer, the last one relates the observer to the setting, and thereby summarizes what has been implied
