2000年的一个晚上，Coldplay乐队录制完首张专辑《Parachutes》中的歌曲《Shiver》后，一起出门休息。外面没有什么灯光，天上的星星显得特别耀眼，“太美了！”制作人Ken Nelson感叹道。坐在一旁、胡乱弹着吉他的主唱克里斯·马汀，也抬起头，久久望着夜空。突然，他即兴哼出了《Yellow》的旋律，他被这美妙场景所激发出的灵感一股脑的冲进他的大脑里。

而在创作歌词的时候，马汀犯了难，他找不到合适的词。他在想一个特定的词，来贴合这首歌的概念。他往录音室看了看，无意间看见斯蒂芬妮（克里斯·马汀碰巧在录音室的朋友）的黄色皮肤，斯蒂芬妮皮肤洋溢的黄色光芒让马汀将这首歌被命名为《Yellow》。之后歌词由乐队共同修改，其中乐队成员强尼·邦蓝建议第一句歌词以“Look at the stars”开头。就是在那个晚上，乐队录制了《Yellow》。
